The great changes in how the Prague gallery system works that have occurred during the past decade have made it very difficult for artists living outside the capital to present their work here. For this reason the CMFA is embarking on a series of exhibitions that will systematically acquaint viewers - especially the Prague public -with the dynamic art scene in different regions of the Czech Republic. The Zlín Scene is the first of these exhibitions. No other city in the Czech Republic is as closely linked with 20th-century artistic Modernism as the south-east Moravian city of Zlín. The city itself, its urban planning and individual pieces of architecture, all embody Modernism's ideas.
This legacy continues to influence the climate of the Zlín culture scene in which an inspiring role is played by the activity of the Regional Gallery of Fine Art and the College of Art which are able to follow on in the strong tradition of similar institutions that existed in Zlín before the mid-20th century. Today as well, Zlín is home to a series of original artists from various generations whose work deserves wider attention.
